Universal Audio UAD Plugin Management: DSP, Native, and Spark

The UAD Dual Ecosystem

Universal Audio now spans three worlds: UAD-2 (DSP-powered plugins requiring Apollo/Satellite hardware), UADx (native versions of the same plugins, no DSP needed), and UAD Spark (subscription for native plugins). The overlap between these is confusing — the same LA-2A compressor exists in all three forms.

UA Connect: The New Hub

UA Connect is the modern management app for UADx and Spark. It handles installation, updates, and authorization. The older UAD Meter & Control Panel still manages DSP plugins and Apollo hardware settings. You need both apps running for a full UAD setup. This dual-app situation is a known UX pain point that UA is gradually resolving.

DSP vs Native: When to Use Which

DSP plugins run on Apollo/Satellite hardware with near-zero latency — ideal for tracking through plugins in real time. Native plugins run on your computer's CPU — fine for mixing and mastering. If you have Apollo hardware: use DSP for tracking (Unison preamps, real-time monitoring chains), use Native for mixing (more instances, no DSP limit). If you don't have Apollo hardware: Spark subscription gives you native access without the hardware investment.

Plugin Equivalents Across Formats

If you own the UAD-2 version of a plugin, you usually get the UADx (native) version for free. Check UA Connect for available crossgrades. The reverse is not true — buying UADx doesn't give you the DSP version. For new purchases, always check if a bundled DSP+Native option exists.
