The NI Universe
Native Instruments is the largest plugin ecosystem in audio production. Kontakt alone has thousands of third-party libraries. Native Access manages it all — or tries to. Understanding how NI's pieces fit together prevents hours of frustration.
Native Access: The Command Center
Native Access handles installation, updates, and authorization for everything NI. Three critical settings: library install location (set this to your largest drive — Kontakt libraries are huge), VST3/AU/AAX install locations, and "Auto-Updates" (turn this off — NI updates can break Kontakt library compatibility).
Kontakt Version Management
You likely have Kontakt 6 and Kontakt 7 (or 8) installed simultaneously. Older libraries may only work in Kontakt 6. Newer libraries may require Kontakt 7+. Keep both versions. In your DAW, label them clearly: "Kontakt 6 (Legacy)" and "Kontakt 8 (Current)." Use Kontakt 8 for new projects, Kontakt 6 only when a library demands it.
Komplete Upgrade Strategy
Komplete bundles go on sale every summer ("Summer of Sound," typically June). This is the only time to buy or upgrade. Never pay full price for Komplete — the 50% off summer sale is reliable. If you have Komplete Standard, upgrading to Ultimate or Collector's Edition during the sale gives you the best value per plugin/library.
Disk Space Realities
Komplete Collector's Edition is over 1TB fully installed. Be selective. Install only the Kontakt libraries, expansions, and plugins you actually use. Native Access lets you install/uninstall individually — use this. Keep unused libraries uninstalled but available for re-download. An external Thunderbolt SSD dedicated to Kontakt libraries is a good investment.
