PreSonus Studio One uses a hybrid approach: it supports VST2, VST3, and AU (on macOS), but its plugin scanning and management are notably faster than most competitors. The secret: Studio One validates plugins lazily — it only fully initializes a plugin when you actually load it into a session, not at DAW startup.

Pipeline XT: The Game-Changer

Pipeline XT is Studio One's unique plugin that lets you insert external hardware processors as if they were plugins. It handles the I/O routing, latency compensation, and even measures the hardware's actual latency with a ping test. If you use outboard gear (compressors, EQs, preamps), Pipeline XT is worth the price of Studio One alone.

Plugin Manager Organization

Studio One's Plugin Manager (View → Plugin Manager) gives you more control than most DAWs. You can: hide plugins from the browser without uninstalling, create custom folder hierarchies, assign plugins to multiple folders simultaneously, and set default presets per plugin. The "Recently Used" smart folder is automatically maintained — great for workflow speed.

Multi-Format Deduplication

If you have both VST3 and AU versions of the same plugin installed, Studio One shows both by default. In Plugin Manager, choose your preferred format and hide the duplicates. VST3 is recommended for cross-platform compatibility; AU if you're macOS-only and use Logic as a secondary DAW (AU presets share between them).
