Physical iLok Key: The Reliable Workhorse

Pros: works offline, portable between machines, no internet dependency, standard on studio computers. Cons: can be lost, stolen, or physically damaged; occupies a USB port; $50 replacement cost. Best for: studio desktop computers, touring rigs, any situation where internet isn't guaranteed.

iLok Cloud: The Convenient Option

Pros: no physical key needed, switch between computers easily, can't be lost or stolen. Cons: requires constant internet connection — an outage kills your session; slightly higher latency for license checks; not all plugins support it. Best for: laptop producers, home studios with stable internet, collaborative workflows where you move between machines.

Zero Downtime (ZDT): Essential Insurance

ZDT ($30/year) covers your physical iLok keys. If a key breaks or is lost, you get immediate temporary licenses (90 days) while a replacement key ships. Without ZDT, a broken iLok means you're locked out of every iLok-protected plugin until you go through a lengthy manual recovery process with each manufacturer individually. For professionals, ZDT is non-negotiable.

Machine Authorization: The Stealth Option

Some developers let you authorize directly to your computer's hardware ID. Pros: no key, no cloud, no internet dependency after activation. Cons: tied to that specific machine — upgrade your motherboard or move to a new computer, and you need to deactivate/reactivate.
