Pre-Install: The 2-Hour Preparation

Before wiping your Mac, you need a complete inventory. Run ProducerGrid (or manually document): every installed plugin with version numbers, all DAW versions, every license manager (iLok, Waves Central, Native Access, etc.) with activation status, all custom presets (export them!), all DAW templates and preference files, and your sample library locations. This takes time but prevents post-install chaos.

License Deactivation Checklist

This is the step that burns people. Deactivate: all iLok machine licenses (move them back to your iLok key or cloud), all Waves licenses (use Waves Central to deactivate), all Plugin Alliance machine activations, any serial-number-based plugins that count activations (Arturia, Ableton, etc. have activation limits), and your DAW license if it's machine-tied. Miss one, and you're emailing support to reset your activation count.

The Clean Install

Create a bootable macOS USB installer. Wipe the drive completely (APFS, GUID partition map). Install macOS. Create your user account. Install all system updates. Only then begin the audio production setup. Do not restore from Time Machine — it will bring back library permission issues and old preference files that can conflict with clean plugin installs.

Post-Install: The Ordered Restore

Install in this exact order: (1) DAWs first — they create the plugin folder structures; (2) License managers — iLok, Waves Central, Native Access, etc.; (3) Plugin installers — batch by manufacturer, not all at once; (4) Sample libraries and content packs; (5) Restore presets and templates from backup; (6) Run ProducerGrid scan to verify everything is detected and valid.

Testing Before Trusting

Open each DAW. Verify it sees all plugins. Open a complex project template. Check that automation, plugin settings, and routing are intact. Test a bounce/export to verify the audio engine works. Only after this full verification should you delete your pre-install backup of the old system.

Key Takeaways

  • A well-organized plugin ecosystem saves hours per week and prevents session-killing issues.
  • Version tracking and systematic backup are the foundations of a reliable studio setup.
  • ProducerGrid automates plugin scanning, version tracking, and organization so you can focus on making music.
